Hugo Aston is the CEO and founding director of the Aston Partners Lawyers. After 16 years practising as a barrister and solicitor in family (divorce, children and property), criminal and children’s matters, it is clear that there is a great deal of support for women and their specific needs, but there is little or no support for men and their specific needs.

Hugo is committed to assisting men achieve fair and equitable resolution to their legal matters. From the outset, it should be noted that Hugo does not in any way support violence or abusive behaviour from women or men.

Social media and the ‘Me Too’ movement are having a big impact on how men are being unfairly portrayed as the ‘bad guys’. Hugo’s observations suggest that this constant negative and inaccurate portrayal of men is having an effect on the way society, the police and the courts treat men as they try to navigate their way through family breakdown, AVO’s or criminal prosecution. Importantly, this constant barrage from the media of negatively portraying men as the “bad guys” is having a very detrimental impact on the way young men are seeing themselves.

It is clear from the hundreds of cases that Hugo has acted in that women are just as capable as men of committing violence and other forms of domestic abuse against their partners. There are often false allegations made by women against men and all too often it is the women who are favoured as being the ‘truth tellers’. However, as we frequently see under cross-examination, women are very capable of lying, working the system, and trying to deceive the court.

Part of the problem is that men do not have the same support networks that women have and often do not report violence or other incidents of domestic or other abuse to police. Instead, they ‘man-up’ and find themselves isolated, ostracised, and desperate. Suddenly, after an allegation has been made, they are not permitted to have time with their children, are unable to return to the matrimonial home because a Domestic Apprehended Violence Order (“DAVO”) is put in place by police or are facing criminal charges as a result of a false allegation. It is often the case that ‘innocent until proven guilty by a court of law’ falls away.

Women often have strong support from their peers, the media and other women. Women have far better communication skills and a strong sense of ‘sisterhood’.  Men, on the other hand, have been socialised into the emotionally isolating position of having to ‘be a man’, ‘stand on their two feet’, ‘man up’, ‘don’t cry, put on a brave face and just deal with it without making a whole lot of fuss’. That is until a family breakdown occurs and suddenly the ‘shit hits the fan’ and they are left wondering what to do and with no one to turn to for support.

Women are far more in touch with their feelings and share them with each other. The problem for men is that they are often out of touch with their feelings and how to deal with them. Men have lost touch with a sense of ‘brotherhood’ and unity amongst themselves and so immediately are at a disadvantage in getting a fair go.
